How to Wash a Comforter Without Ruining It

Your comforter gets more use than almost anything in your home, but washing it can feel intimidating. Too much heat, the wrong cycle, or a machine that's too small can leave you with a lumpy, damaged mess. Here's how to do it right.

Check the Care Label First

Before anything else, read the tag. Most cotton, polyester, and down-alternative comforters are machine washable. Down comforters often are too, but some require dry cleaning. If the tag says "dry clean only," respect it.

Use the Right Size Machine

This is where most people go wrong. A standard home washer maxes out at about 4–5 cubic feet — fine for a twin comforter, but a queen or king needs at least a 40 lb commercial machine. Stuffing a king comforter into a small washer means it won't agitate properly, won't get clean, and could damage the drum or the comforter itself.

At Nifty Laundromat, our 60 lb and 80 lb front-loading washers handle king comforters with room to spare. The 80 lb machines are the largest in the East Windsor area.

Water Temperature and Detergent

Cold or warm water is your safest bet. Hot water can shrink fabric and damage fill material. Use about a quarter to a third of the detergent you'd normally use — too much soap leaves residue trapped in the fill, making it feel stiff and potentially causing skin irritation. Liquid detergent dissolves more evenly than powder.

Wash Cycle

Use a gentle or delicate cycle. Regular agitation can tear stitching and shift fill material. If your machine has a bulky or bedding cycle, that's the ideal choice.

Drying Is the Most Important Step

Use a large dryer on low heat. Medium or high heat will clump the fill and can scorch fabric. Toss in 2–3 clean tennis balls or dryer balls to break up clumps and keep the fill evenly distributed.

Expect it to take 2–3 dryer cycles to get fully dry. Check for damp spots by pressing into the center of the comforter. Any remaining moisture will cause mildew and odor.

When to Use a Drop-Off Service

If your comforter is oversized, delicate, or you'd rather not deal with it, our wash and fold service handles it for you. We wash, dry, and fold comforters as part of our drop-off service. Specialty items like comforters are priced at $20–50 depending on size. Just bring it in anytime — we're open 24/7.

How Often Should You Wash It?

Every 2–3 months is a good baseline. If you use a top sheet, you can stretch it to every 4–6 months. Allergy sufferers should aim for monthly.
